I think Hem's suicide has become mythologised- like most of his life.
I hate to ruin a good story, but Hem suffered from excruciating back pain- chiefly as a result of not one, but two light aircraft crashes.
People would have us believe his suicide was to put himself out of his misery over some vague existential malaise, but sadly this is not true.
The back pain simply got too much for him.
& if you have had severe back issues...you know what he's talking about.
